What is Qigong? Qigong (chee-gong) is a mind-body practice that improves health and well-being. Qi = energy and gong = to work with or cultivate, so Qigong means working with energy for better overall health.
The four elements of Qigong are:
- gentle movements
- breathing techniques
- focused attention
- self-applied massage
Practicing Qigong reduces stress, promotes relaxation, strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure and improves flexibility and balance.
The National Institutes of Health report that from 75% to 90% of all health problems are stress related and, therefore, preventable. Qigong is a proven way to reduce stress, allowing people to make small life-style changes that result in profound health benefits.
The movements of Qigong can be modified and adapted for physical limitations. It can be practiced standing, sitting, or even lying down.
