An ongoing outreach ministry that OSA is involved in is the Bloomfield Backpack Program. The Hyacinth Williams Foundation for Children (HWFC), a non-profit organization based in Bloomfield, was founded by Eunice Medwinter. She learned that elementary school teachers were expressing concern about some of their students who were showing signs of food scarcity when they returned to school on Mondays. In response to this issue, Eunice established the Bloomfield Backpack Program in 2009. Now, in partnership with the Bloomfield and the Hartford Public School Systems and Foodshare, it provides supplemental food and drinks to elementary school students on Fridays throughout the school year. OSA became involved in the program in 2015. The first Thursday of each month approximately 5 parishioners from OSA meet at the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield at 5:30 p.m. and pack many backpacks with food. OSA also contributes monetarily to the program through fundraisers and donations. This is an extremely worthwhile outreach project. Many teachers have expressed to Eunice that they have seen a huge difference in these children when they return to school on Mondays. They are focused and eager to learn. OSA is thrilled to be part of this local ministry.
The backpack program meets at 5:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month except July, August, and September, at the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield.
